Luso-American Youth Scholarships

Introduction
The Luso‑American Education Foundation (LAEF) supports student success by awarding scholarships to qualified candidates. Below are the eligibility criteria, scholarship descriptions, and application deadlines for LAEF’s youth awards.
General Eligibility (applies to all youth scholarships)
- Must be a current high school senior about to graduate.
- Intending to enroll in a junior college, a four‑year college or university, or a trade/business school.
- Official resident of the United States.
- Of Portuguese descent (documentation may be requested) or currently enrolled in Portuguese language classes in high school.
- Applicants may submit applications for more than one LAEF scholarship, but each candidate may receive only a single award.
Scholarship Opportunities
1) C‑1 — General Youth Scholarship
- Award amounts vary:
- $4,000 total, paid as $1,000 per year for four years; or
- $2,000 total, paid as $1,000 per year for two years; or
- $1,000 total, paid in the first year only.
- In addition to the general eligibility above, applicants must fulfill one of the following:
- Be of Portuguese ancestry and have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5; or
- Be taking Portuguese in high school with a minimum GPA of 3.0; or
- Have attended the LAEF Cultural Youth Summer Camp for at least two years and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.
2) C‑2 — Nicole Marie Goulart Memorial Scholarship
- This is a non‑renewable scholarship; award amounts vary.
- Applicants must not be a direct descendant of the donor.
- Additional requirements:
- Be of Portuguese ancestry with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0; and
- Plan to major in one of the following areas: Medicine/Health, Education, Business, or Law.
Application Deadline and Submission
All parts of the scholarship application, plus any required supporting documents, must be postmarked or received by LAEF no later than March 1 for the application to be eligible for committee review. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered.
