IWFA Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by International Women's Fishing Association
Overview
The IWFA Scholarship Trust was created to financially support qualified graduate students studying Marine Science. For the purposes of this program, Marine Science is defined as “the study of the ocean, its ecosystems, and its life forms, as well as the study of coastal environments, oceanic currents, and the sea floor.” Each year the Board of Trustees selects recipients and determines award amounts to help cover research and related costs. Awards are competitive and generally fall between $1,000 and $3,000, with the Trustees having final discretion on the number and size of grants.
Eligibility and selection criteria
- Enrollment: Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited university in the United States or its territorial possessions and pursuing a graduate degree in one of the Marine Sciences.
- Faculty approval and research plan: Only applicants who have been endorsed by their university faculty as appropriate recipients and who have a developed research project will be considered.
- Personal and academic qualifications: Selection will consider evidence of aptitude and ability in the chosen field, the candidate’s character, and previous academic achievements. The Trustees will also weigh the applicant’s relative financial need in relation to the stated research project compared with other applicants.
- No preferential treatment: Candidates will not receive preferential consideration because of any relationship to a member of the IWFA.
Award condition
All scholarship recipients must provide a photograph and sign a release authorizing the IWFA to use the recipient’s name, photo, and a brief summary of their research on the IWFA website. These materials and the signed release must be submitted before scholarship funds will be disbursed.
