Jimmie L. Dean Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Jimmie L. Dean Scholarship Foundation
Introduction
The selection board uses a clear set of measures when evaluating applicants. Primary factors include the student’s GPA, standardized test results (ACT and/or SAT), and the intended undergraduate major. We view each award as an investment in the recipient and in Oklahoma’s future.
Award expectations
- Recipients are expected to complete an undergraduate degree within five years of the date they first enroll at the institution where they received the award as a first-time award recipient.
- The degree should be completed in the major listed on the application.
- Awardees must demonstrate personal responsibility and take part in Foundation activities, such as group dinners, recruiting, and fundraising events.
Academic standards and application guidance
- Your academic transcript and test scores are used to determine whether you are likely to meet the Foundation’s expectations. Do not submit an application if you cannot meet the minimum eligibility requirements.
- For applicants to four-year colleges or universities, ACT scores below 25 will not be considered.
- Applicants to eligible Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology (OSUIT) programs must have a minimum ACT score of 17.
- Applications with ACT scores below the stated minima will be treated as incomplete and will not be reviewed. OSUIT applicants who are unsure which programs qualify should contact the Foundation by email for clarification.
- On the application you will be asked to include the entrance exam score you provided or will provide to your chosen school.
Personal statement / narrative
The application includes a short narrative section. Use this space to explain why funding you would be a sound investment for the Foundation and how you embody the Foundation’s values. Focus on:
- What motivates your career goals and how your chosen major supports them,
- Examples of responsibility (work history, leadership, community service),
- Academic accomplishments and activities that demonstrate your readiness,
- Your ties to Oklahoma and how you plan to represent the Foundation in the future.
Keep in mind that the Foundation may receive over 1,000 applications. This narrative is your chance to help reviewers understand your character and distinguish you from other candidates. Since financial need is assumed for most applicants, avoid devoting the statement primarily to obvious requests for money.
Majors not considered
The Foundation does not fund majors in the following areas because they fall outside our focus: the arts, business, criminal justice, journalism, music, political science, pre-law, psychology, religious studies, sociology, or other social sciences.
