Overview
- Since 2017 the U.S. Metric Association (USMA) has presented two annual awards to honor contributions that promote metrication. Winners are published in the USMA newsletter, Metric Today.
Purpose
- Encourage wider adoption of SI units across U.S. society and raise awareness about correct metric usage.
Awards offered
- Two awards are available each year:
1) National Metric Scholarship Award (for U.S. high school seniors only)
2) National Metric Award
Timeline
- Applications are accepted from 1 October 2025 through 31 March 2026.
- Final judging and award decisions are the responsibility of the USMA, with decisions expected by 31 July 2026.
Award rules and benefits
- All judging and final decisions are made solely by the USMA (expected announcement 31 July 2026).
- Only those selected to receive awards will be notified by email. Other applicants should check the USMA website for award status updates.
- A first-place winner of the National Metric Award is ineligible to receive that first-place award in two consecutive award years.
- Winners and top finalists receive one year of complimentary USMA membership, which includes the Metric Today newsletter.
- USMA publicity and award materials will list winners’ names and their cities.
- Submissions that use AI to generate the award essay are prohibited and will result in disqualification.
- Applications must include objective documentation of metric-related activity.
Sponsorship
- Award funding comes from USMA dues-paying members and other metric advocates to support increased metric awareness and use in the United States.
National Metric Scholarship Award (details)
- Eligibility: Open only to U.S. high school seniors.
- Applicants must select the student scholarship category when submitting their application.
- Awards: First place receives a $2,500 scholarship to be applied toward tuition for a two- or four-year undergraduate degree; second place receives $1,000.
