GIAR Grandmother’s First-Generation Scholarship

Overview
The GIAR Grandmothers Scholarship supports first-generation young women of Portuguese, Mexican, Central American, or South American ancestry who reside in Nevada or Hawaii. Applicants must be under 25 years old. For this program, “first-generation” refers to a young woman who has immigrated to the United States and become a naturalized citizen, or who is the daughter of an immigrant from the listed ancestries. The student must live in Nevada or Hawaii to qualify.
Award amount and renewal
- Standard award: a one-time grant of up to $5,000, awarded based on demonstrated financial need. Need will be confirmed by the FAFSA and other financial aid documentation you submit.
- Special award: on occasion one scholarship may be offered to fully cover the cost of attendance at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), up to $25,000, also contingent on financial need.
- Existing awards may be renewed if the recipient reapplies and continues to meet eligibility and performance requirements.
Eligibility
To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must:
- Be a resident of northern Nevada (generally defined as Tonopah and areas north) or a resident of the state of Hawaii.
- Be under the age of 25.
- Be a first-generation young woman as defined above, of Portuguese, Mexican, Central American, or South American ancestry.
- Have graduated from high school or be a graduating high school senior with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
- Have been accepted to an accredited college or university in the United States.
- Agree to maintain a minimum cumulative college GPA of 2.5 while receiving scholarship funds and to submit unofficial transcripts at the end of every semester in which the award is active.
Required application materials
Applications must include:
- An official or unofficial transcript showing academic record.
- Proof of enrollment or an acceptance letter from an accredited U.S. college or university.
- A one-page personal essay written by the applicant.
- A financial aid packet (including FAFSA information and other financial documents) to verify need.
