Ohio Valley Member Chapter Scholarship

Overview
The Ohio Valley Member Chapter Scholarship Program makes up to six awards for the current year, with a combined maximum total of US$17,500. One single application covers consideration for any and all scholarships offered by the chapter.
Available Awards
- Allan M. Smillie Scholarship — 1 award, one-year term, $5,000 (STEM student)
- The Systems Group Scholarship — 1 award, one-year term, $2,500 (STEM student)
- Ohio Valley Member Chapter Scholarships — 4 awards, each one-year, $2,500 (STEM students)
Note: An applicant may receive only one scholarship in a given year. Recipients are welcome and encouraged to apply again in future years.
Who May Apply
Applicants must meet all of the following:
- Be the child (including step-children, adopted children, or wards) of an AIST Ohio Valley Member Chapter member in good standing, OR be an AIST Student member in good standing.
- Have been accepted to, be planning to attend, or be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited university, college, or technical training center located within the chapter’s service area.
- Be pursuing coursework that directly supports the production, support, management, or distribution of iron and steel.
Preferred programs are Bachelor of Science degrees in STEM fields. Candidates pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in related areas (for example, general manufacturing management) or an Associate of Science in a STEM-related technology program are also eligible.
Selection Process
The AIST Ohio Valley Member Chapter Scholarship Committee will evaluate all applications and has sole discretion in selecting recipients. Decisions will be based on overall academic achievement (with emphasis on mathematics and science), extracurricular involvement, leadership, and the content of the applicant’s essay. Awards are granted without consideration of gender, race, ethnicity, financial need, or other socio-economic factors.
Terms and Conditions
1. Scholarship funds must be applied at an accredited university, college, or technical training center.
2. The recipient must begin the program in the fall term of the same year the scholarship is awarded and must meet the institution’s requirements to continue as a degree candidate. To renew a scholarship, the student must submit a new application and an official transcript covering the entire academic year to the AIST Ohio Valley Member Chapter Secretary as soon as the current term concludes, and no later than 30 April for review by the Scholarship Award Committee.
3. The AIST Foundation will send the scholarship payment as a lump sum to the recipient’s institution for deposit into the student’s account.
4. Any delay or interruption in admission or study must be reported immediately to the Chapter Secretary; failure to notify may result in forfeiture of the award.
5. Recipients are expected to complete the degree program or major listed on their application at one institution. Transfers to an equivalent eligible program or to another accredited institution are permitted only with prior approval from the Scholarship Award Committee. The Chapter Secretary must be notified in writing of a transfer and provided a copy of the new admission offer by 30 April of the year of transfer.
Required Application Materials
Applicants must submit:
- A current resume listing employment, extracurricular activities, and any leadership roles.
- A recommendation or evaluation from a school counselor, teacher, or professor.
- An essay (maximum two pages) outlining professional goals, explaining interest in a career within the steel industry, and describing how the applicant’s skills could benefit the industry.
- A copy of current high school or college transcripts.
