Jeffrey Vernon Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation
Introduction
Jeffrey Vernon’s life was a testament to resilience and generosity. Born with a serious congenital heart defect and not expected to survive beyond his 18th birthday, Jeff nevertheless lived to age 33. His journey—from a gifted student to a successful broadcaster and, ultimately, an organ and tissue donor—continues to inspire those who knew him and those helped by the scholarship established in his name.
Life and career
Jeff graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1984, earning a broadcasting award, then went on to Central Michigan University where he completed a degree in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts in 1990. He built a career in broadcasting that reached a peak in 1996 when he served as cast director and producer at WAVY 9&10 in Hampton Roads, Virginia. In 1998 Jeff developed congestive heart failure and died while awaiting a heart transplant. In a final act of compassion he donated bone, tissue, and more, giving others a chance at life.
