Larry Carp Memorial Scholarship

Overview
The Larry Carp Memorial Scholarship provides one $5,000 award, renewable for up to three additional undergraduate years, to a graduating high school senior from the St. Louis area who is an immigrant to the United States or the child of an immigrant and who intends to pursue an undergraduate degree in a STEM field. The recipient must demonstrate unmet financial need and plan to attend a nonprofit, accredited two- or four-year college or university in the United States. Applicants with participation in music programs may receive preference.
Eligibility
- Graduating high school senior from the St. Louis region
- Immigrant to the United States or the child of immigrants
- Intending to earn an undergraduate degree in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics)
- Accepted to, and planning to enroll in, a nonprofit, accredited two- or four-year U.S. college or university
- Demonstrates unmet financial need. For this scholarship, unmet need is generally calculated as: cost of attendance minus (student’s grant aid from other sources + Student Aid Index as reported on the FAFSA Submission Summary).
- Preference may be given to applicants who have participated in music programs
Selection process
The St. Louis Community Foundation will choose the recipient based on:
- Academic preparation and commitment to higher education in a STEM field
- Strength of the required essay(s)
- Degree of financial need and any unusual personal or financial circumstances
Applications that are incomplete will not be considered. Answer every question that applies to you, even if it is not marked “required.”
Renewal requirements
To continue receiving the award in subsequent years, a recipient must:
- Make satisfactory academic progress toward a STEM degree
- Continue to demonstrate financial need
- Submit a timely renewal application
Award amounts may vary each year because they depend on available funding and the recipient’s financial need at the time of renewal.
Notification and award disbursement
- Application decisions will be posted in June. Applicants should check their Scholarship Central account to view status (awarded or denied).
- Scholarship checks will be mailed in early August directly to the college the recipient will attend.
- Renewal application instructions and communications will come from the St. Louis Community Foundation.

Required materials and supplemental questions
Note: Your Scholarship Central General Application must include the requested transcript and supporting documents described below before an award decision can be made.
1. Confirm that you have reviewed the full scholarship details and eligibility criteria (click the scholarship name in the application header to view details).
2. Upload your FALL transcript for the current academic year to your Scholarship Central General Application. The transcript must show your name, school, grades, and cumulative GPA. If you have previously uploaded an earlier transcript, replace it with the current transcript and update your GPA answer. If your college choice changed, update that on the General Application.
3. Do you meet the immigrant / child-of-immigrant requirement described above?
4. If yes, provide the date you (or your parent(s)) arrived in the United States and indicate your country of origin.
5. Are you pursuing a degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics)?

8. Essay: Describe your views on the role of science in improving the human condition.
9. Describe the role music plays in your life.
10. List volunteer or community service activities (include the activity, hours or time involved, dates, and any positions held).
11. List extracurricular school activities or family responsibilities (include activity, time involved, dates, and any positions held).
12. Provide work history (employer name, dates employed, hours per week, and position held).
13. Where do you plan to live during the academic year for which you are applying?
14. Upload your FAFSA Submission Summary for the upcoming academic year.
15. Enter the Student Aid Index (SAI) shown on your FAFSA Submission Summary.
16. Upload next year’s Financial Aid Award Letter from the college you will attend. The award letter must include: college name, applicant name, and details of loans, grants, and scholarships offered. This document is required before an award can be determined.
17. Indicate which school issued the award letter you uploaded.
18. Upload documentation from the college showing your total cost of attendance.
19. If you are currently enrolled in college, list any grant assistance you are already receiving from other sources (include source and annual amount).
20. List names and ages of any siblings and the schools they are attending, if applicable.
21. If you have unusual financial circumstances (education-related costs, existing education loans, or other hardships), explain them here. The Foundation may request tax forms, W-2s, or other documentation to verify information provided on the FAFSA Submission Summary.
22. Recommendation (General): Provide the name and email of an instructor, counselor, advisor, supervisor, or similarly qualified person who will submit a recommendation for you. You are responsible for notifying this person to expect an email with instructions.
23. Recommendation (STEM teacher): Provide the name and email of a STEM faculty member (preferably a computer science, mathematics, or science teacher) or a mentor from a STEM extracurricular group who will submit a recommendation. You are responsible for notifying this person to expect an email with instructions.
24. Signature: By entering your full name, you certify that the information in this application is accurate to the best of your knowledge and you authorize the St. Louis Community Foundation and its agents to review and verify academic and other records related to this application. If awarded, you agree to inform the Foundation of any changes to your college plans. You also acknowledge that portions of scholarship funds may be taxable if total awards exceed qualified education expenses (tuition, course-related fees, supplies, and equipment).
