Overview Each year The Mikkelson Foundation awards a scholarship to an exceptional high school graduate from Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, or New Mexico who has been accepted to an accredited college or university that grants undergraduate and/or graduate degrees. Ideal candidates show strong aptitude in mathematics and the sciences, intend to major in engineering, the physical or biological sciences, or mathematics, and exhibit the potential for significant accomplishment after completing their degree. 2026 Award Details - Number of scholarships: five - Amount: $5,000 each - Renewal: Awards may be renewed for up to four years total provided the student remains enrolled and in good standing at their institution. Important deadlines - Application receipt deadline: April 10, 2026 (all materials must be received by the Foundation on or before this date). - Selection process begins: the morning of April 11 (the deadline is firm). Who is eligible To qualify for The Mikkelson Foundation Scholarship you must: - Be a member of the high school graduating class of 2026 from a school located in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, or New Mexico. - Plan to enroll in a four-year accredited college or university in the fall of 2026 majoring in engineering, mathematics, or a natural science. - Have an unweighted high school GPA of at least 3.7. - Have a cumulative SAT score of 1200 or higher, or an ACT composite score of 28 or higher. Application requirements Your submission must include all of the following items and be mailed so the Foundation receives them by April 10, 2026: 1. An official, complete high school transcript. 2. Copies of national standardized test scores (if those scores are not already printed on the transcript). 3. Three letters of reference from high school teachers, counselors, employers, or activities directors. Please inform your recommenders that their letters must arrive by April 10. 4. A fully completed application form filled out by the student. 5. An original personal essay written by the applicant. Box 768 Monument, CO 80132-0768 Note: Overnight couriers do not deliver to P.O. boxes; the Foundation accepts only mail at the above P.O. Box address. Helpful suggestions - Start early; a strong essay and thoughtful recommendations take time. - Respect your recommenders’ schedules—provide ample time and occasional polite reminders. - Complete every section of the application form and ensure the most important details appear on it. - You may include additional supporting materials, but do not assume the selection committee will search for missing information. - Choose references who know you well and can speak to your achievements. - Verify that every required component is included before mailing.
