Overview
The Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc. provides scholarships for both undergraduate students (including current high school seniors who will enroll as college freshmen in the fall) and graduate students who plan to attend accredited colleges or universities.
Important deadlines
- GCFM application deadline: April 1 (all application materials must be received by this date).
- Applications that qualify for consideration by National Garden Clubs, Inc. are forwarded to NGC by March 1.
- Official GCFM recognition of scholarship recipients occurs at the end of the fiscal year (June 30); winners are announced in the fall issue of The Mayflower.
- National Garden Club $4,000 scholarship applications are due to NGC on February 1; NGC announces winners at its Annual Meeting and publishes them in the fall issue of The Mayflower.
Who is eligible
Applicants must:
- Have maintained legal Massachusetts residency for at least one year.
- Hold a minimum cumulative grade point average of B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale).
- Demonstrate good character and financial need.
- Be enrolled or planning to enroll at an accredited college or university.
Fields of study supported
Scholarships are available to students majoring in horticulture, floriculture, landscape design or architecture, conservation, forestry, agronomy, city planning, environmental studies, land management, botany, biology, and related subjects.
Scholarship details
- There are eleven (11) scholarships administered through GCFM.
- Students need submit only one application to be considered for any of the GCFM awards.
- Note: the Ruth Cleveland Scholarship is open to either graduate or undergraduate students studying the arts and/or sciences.
- Three of the GCFM scholarships carry the requirement that the recipient attend the University of Massachusetts.
- The GCFM Scholarship Committee determines eligibility and award decisions based on the completed application packet.
How winners are notified
- Official recognition is at fiscal year-end (June 30). Winners receive notification letters; non-recipients receive regret letters.
- Awardees are publicly announced in the fall issue of The Mayflower.
- Applications meeting National Garden Clubs, Inc. criteria are forwarded to NGC by March 1; NGC announces its scholarship winners at its Annual Meeting and in The Mayflower.
Application materials and submission
The GCFM Application Form and Financial Aid Form are distributed as fillable PDF documents (designed to be completed on a computer with Adobe Acrobat Reader). Follow these basic steps:
1. Download the GCFM Application and Financial Aid forms.
2. If you do not already have it, download Adobe Acrobat Reader to complete the PDF forms.
Required documents (all items must be included)
- Completed GCFM Application Form
- Completed GCFM Financial Aid Form
- Official school transcript(s)
- Personal essay
- List of extracurricular, volunteer, and related activities
- Letters of recommendation (each letter limited to one page)
