Knight Essay Scholarship
Scholarship Sponsored by National Society, Sons of the American Revolution
Introduction The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) welcomes high school students in grades 9–12 who have an interest in the American Revolution to enter the George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest. The competition is open to students attending public, private, parochial, or home schools, provided they are U.S. citizens or legal residents. Eligibility - Grade level: 9th through 12th grade. - Residency/status: U.S. citizens and legal residents. - School type: home school, public, parochial, or private high school. - Limit: each student may submit only one entry per contest year. Essay requirements - Length: 800 to 1,200 words. - Originality: essays must be the student’s own, previously unpublished work. - Topic: focus on an event, individual, principle, or ideal connected with the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the U.S. Constitution. - Evaluation criteria: submissions will be judged on historical accuracy, clarity and organization, grammar and spelling, and quality of documentation. Contest structure and entry process The contest advances through three levels: local chapter competition, state society, and the national finals. Entries should be submitted through the SAR chapter nearest the student’s residence. If there is no local chapter or local chapters are not participating, students may enter at the state society level; in such cases, contact-at-large personnel can provide guidance.
