The Mercantile Bank of Michigan Scholarship Fund provides financial awards each year to graduating seniors from the Clare, Mt. Pleasant (including Sacred Heart Academy), and Shepherd areas who have shown exceptional dedication to community service and plan to continue their education or vocational training.

The Paul Moeggenberg Family Youth Agricultural Scholarship was created to honor a man who dedicated his life to faith, family, community, and farming. At 15 years old, Paul left high school to help run his parents’ farm while his older brothers served in World War II. In 1955, he and his new wife, Eleanor, bought a farm in Leaton, Michigan. In 1959 — the same year Alaska became the 50th state, the Cold War was an international backdrop, and Dwight D. Eisenhower was president — a group of seniors at Mt. Pleasant High School were occupied with the usual end-of-high-school activities: senior events, Friday night plans, and preparing for graduation. Classmate Janice Brien Huffman recalled, “We were a fun class who enjoyed being where we were, enjoyed the moments,” and later reflected that the group “just accomplished more than anyone of us would have expected.”
